Sun expands x64 network computing options
ISSUED BY: CITIGATE SA PR
[Johannesburg, 14 April 2005] - Sun Microsystems has announced performance and feature enhancements to its AMD Opteron processor-based systems, expanding its offering for network computing. Heidi Wahl, business manager: volume products at Sun Microsystems sub-Saharan Africa region, says systems equipped with AMD processors deliver incredible performance and competitive advantages, the new AMD processors have proven to be faster and more reliable than ever before. "The Sun Fire V20z and Sun Fire V40z servers – often referred to as x64 systems – have outperformed two- and four-way servers from competing vendors," she says. "Systems equipped with AMD processors have been designed to help eliminate inherent processing bottlenecks and enhance overall system performance and efficiency. In addition to unmatched operating system support, customers can enjoy up to a 25% performance increase on the Sun Fire V20z server, and a 29% performance increase on the Sun Fire V40z server. "The performance increases at no additional cost and competitive pricing demonstrates our commitment to users of all sizes, and reflects our ability to deliver leading-edge technologies," she adds. "South African volume product resellers (VPRs) are entrenching the Sun x64 range of servers in the local SME (small to medium enterprise) market on the back of AMD's 64-bit technology, which is providing users with a significant competitive price/performance advantage," she says. Demonstrating their dual-core technology, Sun and AMD will continue to advance 32-bit performance in the enterprise with a simplified migration to 64-bit computing on dual-core ready platforms, while providing a choice of operating systems including Solaris 10, Red Hat and SUSE Linux, as well as Windows.
